Inside a LessonCrest book
How it works
Every LessonCrest workbook is laid out the same way, in every subject and every grade.
Every LessonCrest book follows the same steps
Step 1 comes once, before the first module. Steps 2 to 6 repeat in every module. Step 7 is the answer key at the back. Books for older learners use different names for the same steps.
Grades K–2, 3–5 and 6–8
- Step 1: Get Ready
A short check before the first module. It ends in a table that points to a starting page.
- Step 2: Learn It
A short explanation of the new idea and the words that go with it.
- Step 3: See It
Worked examples that show the idea being used.
- Step 4: Try It Together
Practice with help boxes. The help gets smaller on the next page.
- Step 5: On Your Own
Practice alone: plain questions, the same idea in new forms, a task in a new situation, and a mistake to find and fix.
- Step 6: Look Back
Questions answered from memory, then a checkpoint that points to a page to revisit or on to the next module.
- Step 7: Check and Fix
The answer key at the back, with notes that explain.
Grades 9–12 and Intro College
- Step 1: Readiness Check
- Step 2: Concept
- Step 3: Worked Example
- Step 4: Guided Practice
- Step 5: Independent Practice
- Step 6: Review
- Step 7: Answers and Explanations
What’s inside every book
The parts come in the same order in every book. From page 3 on, the line at the top of each page names its step.
- How to use the book, p. 2. The steps, and a note for the adult. Nearly every book also says here what it does not cover.
- Readiness check, pp. 3–4. Step 1. It ends in a table that points to a starting page instead of giving a score.
- Modules, from p. 5. Short modules, each with a new idea. Steps 2 to 6 happen inside every module.
- Checkpoint, the last page of each module. A few short tasks, then a table that points back to a page or on to the next module.
- Mixed review, after the last module. Questions from all the modules, mixed together.
- Exit check, after the mixed review. A last check, worked alone.
- Reflect and repair, then Try again, after the exit check. A missed question to repair, then fresh questions of the same kind.
- Extra practice, before the answers. In most of the books.
- Answers and explanations, at the back. Step 7: the answer key.
Checks that point to a page
The readiness check and every checkpoint end in a table. Each row describes what went wrong and says what to do next. After the readiness check, that is a starting page. After a checkpoint, it is a page to revisit or the next module.
After the last module comes an exit check, then a page to repair a missed question and a page to try again. Many of the books say that one good retry shows progress, not proof.
A checkpoint table
- Counted a thing twice or skipped one
- Go back to page 5. Slide real objects as you count.
- Counted well but did not say how many
- Redo the Ava task on page 12. The last number tells how many.
- All correct
- Go on to Module 2.
An answer key that explains
Step 7 is the answer key, at the back of every book under the heading “Answers and explanations”. Under an answer the key can add notes labeled Why, Common mistake and Help. Most of the books also use Look for.
Why: There are 3 stars, so the matching numeral is 3.
Common mistake: Touching one apple twice (6) or missing one (4).
Help: Use 5 real objects. Slide each one to the side as you say its number.
