Number Sense
Count, Compare, and Order

See why the signs work, then use the rules.
This workbook builds integer skills from models that make sense. Learners start with position and distance from zero, then add with number-line moves and zero pairs, subtract by comparing and undoing, and multiply and divide using patterns and inverse checks. Every module follows the same seven steps, from a short readiness check and a worked example to independent practice, spaced review and error analysis. Contexts include temperatures, elevations and an elevator. The key at the back explains each answer, names a common error and gives a reteaching cue.
For learners in grades 6–8 who can already add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers.
Covered
In this book: positive and negative numbers, opposites, absolute value, comparing integers, the four operations with integers, and short expressions with parentheses, absolute value or zero.
Not covered
Not in this book: negative fractions and decimals in depth, exponents, and solving equations.
Before you start
You should already be able to compare whole numbers, add and subtract, and use multiplication and division facts.
Things to have
Work in pencil, and write down any help you used (counters, a ruler, a partner).
Notice
Pictures in this book are simplified learning models. Check answers with the explanations at the back of the book.
Check the skills you need before you begin. If something feels tricky, an adult can help you start in the right place.
Read a short, clear explanation of the new idea and the words that go with it.
Watch the idea being used, one step at a time, in a worked example.
Practice with prompts and help cues. The help gets smaller as you get stronger.
Practice on your own with different kinds of questions, and explain your thinking.
Look back at earlier learning so it stays strong, then check where to go next.
Check your answers. Each answer explains why, names a common mistake, and shows how to fix it.
